Call for Papers on Türkiye-Indonesia Relations

The historical roots of Türkiye–Indonesia relations can be traced back to the sixteenth century, when the Sultanate of Aceh sought assistance from the Ottoman Empire in response to increasing Portuguese pressure. These historical contacts between the Ottoman Empire and the Sultanate of Aceh constitute important historical foundations for contemporary Türkiye–Indonesia relations. The establishment of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Indonesia commenced in 1950. Following the establishment of diplomatic relations, Türkiye–Indonesia relations have gradually developed through increasing political dialogue and high-level contacts. Over the decades, bilateral relations have evolved from diplomatic engagement into a multidimensional partnership encompassing economic, cultural, humanitarian, and political cooperation.

The intensification of high-level reciprocal visits from 2004 onwards gave new impetus to Türkiye–Indonesia relations. This process reached a significant milestone in 2011, when bilateral relations were elevated to the level of a strategic partnership. The establishment of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSC) in 2022 further institutionalized bilateral cooperation and provided a framework for deepening collaboration across a wide range of areas. The inaugural meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, held in 2025, together with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, marked a significant milestone in the development of Türkiye–Indonesia relations and signalled a new phase of multidimensional strategic cooperation. Against this backdrop, the evolving Türkiye–Indonesia partnership offers a rich field for examining the historical, political, economic, strategic, and socio-cultural dimensions of bilateral relations, as well as their broader implications for regional and international affairs.

Türkiye and Indonesia cooperate within a range of international and regional organizations and platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the G20, the Developing-8 (D-8), and MIKTA. Türkiye–Indonesia relations provide opportunities for cooperation across a broad spectrum of regional and global issues, including international peace and security, sustainable development, economic cooperation, humanitarian affairs, and the promotion of dialogue among diverse regions and cultures. Another important dimension of Türkiye–Indonesia relations is their engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In this regard, ASEAN provides an important platform for expanding the scope of Türkiye–Indonesia cooperation at both bilateral and regional levels. On 21 July 2026, Türkiye was accepted as ASEAN’s 12th Dialogue Partner, a development that provides new opportunities for deepening Türkiye–Indonesia cooperation within both bilateral and regional frameworks. This development has further strengthened the regional and international dimension of Türkiye-Indonesia relations.

Today, Türkiye–Indonesia relations continue to expand across a wide range of fields, reflecting the growing depth and scope of bilateral engagement and the shared interest of both countries in strengthening cooperation in response to emerging regional and global challenges.

The issue of Almanac Diplomatique dedicated to Türkiye–Indonesia relations aims to provide a forum for scholarly discourse on the historical ties, evolving diplomatic relations, contemporary strategic cooperation, and emerging areas of collaboration between the two countries. It seeks to examine the multifaceted dimensions of Türkiye–Indonesia relations, encompassing political, economic, strategic, humanitarian, social, cultural, and public diplomacy aspects, as well as their engagement within regional and international organisations and platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the G20, the Developing Eight (D-8), MIKTA, and ASEAN. The objective of this issue is to explore how the historical foundations and contemporary dynamics of Türkiye–Indonesia relations are reflected in the evolving regional and international diplomatic landscape and to assess their broader implications for international relations. Furthermore, the issue welcomes original scholarly contributions that seek to advance new avenues of research and deepen academic understanding of the evolving Türkiye–Indonesia partnership and its broader implications for regional and international affairs.
